Popularly known as La Suda, the King's Castle (Castell del Rei in Catalan) is a large fortress located on the hill of Lleida, also called Turó de la Seu Vella, an outstanding viewpoint over the city and the region. During more than a millennium the castle has been a witness of very important historical events in the history of the city and of Catalonia.
Of Muslim origin, documented since the 9th century, the castle was the palace where the monarchs resided during their stays in Lleida. The fortified complex preserve the south wing of the old medieval palace (13th century), located next to the old cathedral, and the fortifications built between the 18th and 19th centuries, formed by walls of 3.8 kilometers in length, four bastions, moat and several platforms. The configuration of the modern walled enclosures responds to French Vauban system.
