In the historic center of the small town of Agramunt we find the church of Santa Maria, one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the western part of Catalonia. We are in front of a building declared of Cultural Interest, built in the 12th - 13th centuries and whose impressive portal is a true architectural jewel.

The church is large and presents basilical plan with three naves covered with pointed barrel vaults and finished with semicircular apses. The three naves are separated by arches resting on pillars. The temple is accessed through two doorways opened in the north and west walls. The complex is completed by two chapels with Baroque altarpieces and a square bell tower, finished at the end of 14th century in Gothic style.

Highlights

✔ The monumental main portal, located in a protruding part of the west façade. For its rich decoration, the portal is considered along with the Fillols Doorway of the Seu Vella as the best example of the famous Romanesque sculptural school of Lleida. It consists of eight semicircular arches in degradation supported on columns with decorated capitals. In the center of the interior archivolt is a high relief representing the Virgin with Child Jesus in her arms.
✔ The bomb shelter. Below the central nave is an anti-aircraft shelter of the Civil War recovered in 2005 during the restoration works, a singularly well-preserved installation consisting of two galleries, one of 34 meters and a cross-section of 28 meters. It can be visited for free.
