Font Màgica, the work of the architect and engineer Carles Buïgas, was one of the great attractions of the Universal Exhibition of 1929. The project was considered very ambitious for the time, but after almost a year of hard work employing more than 3,000 workers daily, the dream became reality. After a period of abandonment, in 1955 it was repaired by Carles Buïgas himself. In the 80's music was added and before the 1992 Olympic Games it was completely restored and modernized.
The Magic Fountain has an elliptical shape and is 65 meters long on the major axis. The visible part of the fountain is formed by three concentric lakes located at different height, which have a total volume of more than 3 million liters of water. The choreography generated automatically from the analysis of musical pieces includes water movements coordinated with the change of light and colors. The result is a unique show with a duration of 10 to 14 minutes, a magic dance that attracts annually about 2.5 million visitors.
Each year the Magic Fountain hosts the final act of La Mercè feast, the pyromusical. The exhibition of light and color of the fountain is combined with a large display of fireworks for the charm of a large crowd of spectators that fills the Reina Maria Cristina avenue.
