In the lower part of the historic center, near the Meder River, stands the Cathedral of Sant Pere (Saint Peter), the most notable building in the city and seat of the diocese of Vic. The monumental complex presents a mix of architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Neoclassical, including Gothic and Baroque.

The structure of the church corresponds to the neoclassical style typical of the late 18th century and consists of three spacious naves of similar height, separated by pillars topped with large Corinthian capitals and covered with hemispherical vaults and by a dome in the transept. At the head there is a deep polygonal apse. The interior dimensions are: 69.5 meters long, 29 meters wide and 27.5 meters high.

Highlights

✔ The square bell tower (11th century), attached to the north wall of the cathedral. Its 40 meters high, divided into six floors, and 8 meters wide make it the largest Romanesque belfry in Catalonia. The Lombard style ornamental elements are of great quality.
✔ The Gothic cloister of great beauty, built in the 14th century.
✔ The Romanesque crypt (11th century), located under the presbytery. The pre-Romanesque capitals from an old church are the oldest elements of the entire cathedral.
✔ The old main altarpiece, late Gothic style (15th century), sculpted in alabaster by the master Pere Oller. It is located in the ambulatory.
✔ The neoclassical façade, characterized by the three portals, corresponding to the three naves, which incorporate Romanesque archivolts taken from the old cathedral. The central door is the most ornate, with pilasters, a pediment and a sculpture of Saint Peter in a niche.
✔ The extensive mural paintings (20th century), by Josep Maria Sert.
✔ The baroque side chapels (17th century), located on the north side of the church.
✔ The cathedral treasury, which preserves a collection of high-value religious objects.
