This spectacular castle dominates the town of Torroella de Montgrí from the top of the calcareous Montgrí Massif, at a height of 310 meters and only 6 kilometers from the sea. It is a well preserved military fortification, built in the late 13th century in the style of crusader castles in Middle East. The end use of this construction was to defend the dominions of king Jaime II of Aragon against the threat of the county of Empúries.
Only the outer part of this fortress with squared plan and great proportions is finished. The visitors can admire the massive crenellated walls 13 meters high and 31 meters long, the four circular towers attached at the corners and the water reservoir with barrel vault. The inner part of the castle is empty.

Climbing up a spiral staircase to the top of one of the towers you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ampurdán region, sighting the Costa Brava from the Sierra de Rodes in the north to Cape Begur to the south.
